For any child/teenager to reach their full potential, they need the tools to cope with the emotional stressors that exist in life. Inevitably, every child will encounter issues at some point with peer relationships, boundaries, self-esteem, grief, social media, bullying and anxiety. It is when these issues start to impact their sense of self and their education that counselling should be considered. Counselling can provide your child/teenager with the strategies needed to empower them to cope with their problems in the long term. Effective counselling considers the whole child and is specific to each individual person depending on their circumstances.
A counsellor with an education background will choose counselling techniques that use evidence-based strategies combined with teaching techniques that are designed to engage and inspire their young clients. A teacher is trained to make adjustments that meet the individual needs of their students. They understand that adjustments can and should be modified depending on the progress made by the child/teenager. When your child/teenager is receiving counselling by a trained counsellor with an education background, they are indeed getting the best of both worlds!
When your child/teenager receives individual therapy, you as their parent/carer will be part of the process with the understanding that the child/teenager’s privacy is also respected. Although the counsellor will work separately with the child/teenager, 10 minutes will be allocated at the beginning and the end of the one-hour consultation to discuss concerns and strategies with parent/s. Parents will be informed throughout the counselling process and will be provided with useful, practical information on how to support their child/teenager.

Tina Myrteza is the Founder and Director of Cardia Counselling with over 30 years’ experience in education. She holds a Diploma of Teaching (NZ), Bachelor of Education, Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies, and a Master of Educational Studies – Guidance, Counselling and Careers from the University of Queensland. In addition to being a teacher and counsellor, Tina is also a University Supervisor to preservice teachers through Australian Catholic University. She holds certification as a Triple P Presenter and as an Anxiety Coach Presenter, which focusses on reducing anxiety and building resilience in children.
As a passionate, experienced teacher and mother of four adult children, Tina specifically understands the challenges that exist within the school setting for students, parents, and educators. Accessing quality counselling requires a professional who knows the school system, the Australian Curriculum and how students learn and interact with their peers and teachers. Tina’s insight and experience as an educator places her in the unique position to combine her education and counselling knowledge to support clients as they navigate the school system. Her practical, realistic approach means that her advice is applicable to a school setting, as it is based on years of experience combined with extensive counselling knowledge.
Individual counselling sessions are personalised and planned according to the needs of each client. They include a variety of evidence-based therapies and strategies to engage her younger clients and enable progress. Tina is also a registered teacher with the Queensland College of Teachers, and a member of the Australian Counsellors Association and Queensland Guidance and Counselling Association.
Tina is working with my son to understand and manage anxiety-based hurdles. My son is always eager to visit Tina, and it has been a pleasure/relief to observe his continual growth. Her approach is professional and empathetic, creating a safe space for open communication. Her extensive teaching background means she knows schools and has witnessed how children grow and develop. She is a gem, and I can’t recommend Tina highly enough.

Tina is assisting my child with mindfulness and managing his emotions. Tina is extremely approachable, warm and engaging. Fast response to emails. Very organised, with a lot of preparation before child counselling sessions. Tina put effort into preparing audiovisual learning materials during sessions and to take home. Individualises approach to suit the child’s strengths, learning style and personality. I love how Tina is an experienced school teacher, as her approach is down- to-earth and practical, not just clinical.
