Taking the first step to book an appointment with a counsellor can be daunting, especially if you haven’t received counselling before. We understand the courage it takes to make that first appointment. Placing your trust in the counselling process can be a big step to take and can make you wonder if it actually works! The reason counselling CAN work is due to brain plasticity. Plasticity is one of the newer discoveries of neuroscience and tells us of the brain’s ability to change itself to adapt to its environment by weakening or strengthening different synaptic connections. By changing behaviour, and/or your environment, by learning new things or choosing to think differently, you can change your own brain, which in turn changes everything else about you and your life.
At your Initial Consultation you will have the chance to connect with your counsellor and discuss your feelings. Your counsellor will work with you to co construct goals that are best suited to your needs. After the first appointment you will have the autonomy to make counselling sessions fit your busy schedule. There are options for a quick 30 minute ‘Check in’, or you may prefer to meet your counsellor for a ‘Walk and Talk’ at Observatory Park on Wickham Terrace. We also offer counselling via zoom calls if you’re unable to come into the rooms. Counselling is not about ‘fixing’ you or your problem, it’s about empowering you with the skills and strategies to independently resolve issues today and into the future. We will support you throughout the therapeutic process to reach your goals and to make positive changes in your life.
When we enter into a relationship with another person, we do so with the intent that we will be happy. Inevitably, circumstances can change, and relationships can experience problems that not only impact the couple involved but also others around them, such as children and even extended family members and friends.
Couples Counselling is about helping the couple to explore the dynamics that they may have unwittingly fallen into, as well as understanding the needs that each person has within the relationship. Through Couples Counselling, we ensure that each person is listened to without judgement, through safe boundaries and respect. Our goal is to allow our clients to communicate more honestly and openly in the hope that a deeper understanding of one another can be obtained through our sessions.
You are not alone. We are here to help and invite you to engage in our Couples Counselling sessions which are there to help strengthen relationships and provide a safe and welcoming place to engage in constructive, healing dialogue.
All families, no matter what the structure, face challenges. These challenges can come from several factors including communication problems, health problems and family dynamics. When families go through changes such as a breakup or becoming a new blended family, children may struggle to adapt to their new situation and wrestle with the loyalty they have towards a parent or a new partner.
Adult families also come with their own complex range of issues, ranging from sibling rivalry, different values and perspectives as well as ageing parents. New partners that come into the family can also challenge the family dynamics leading to a variety of feelings and emotions.
Either way, families are complex and ALL families experience challenges as they grow and change throughout the years. You are not alone. We are here to help and invite you to engage in our 90 minute Family Counselling sessions which are there to help strengthen relationships and provide a safe and welcoming place to engage in constructive, healing dialogue.

As the Founder and Director of Cardia Counselling, I wanted to create a space where clients would feel welcomed, safe, heard, and respected; a space where both young, old and everyone in between would feel a sense of belonging and lots of natural light would serve to welcome each client. I am proud to say that my vision has come to fruition, and I am truly grateful to be able to offer these wonderful rooms to my clients.
As a counsellor I understand the responsibility and privilege of being chosen by a client to hear and safeguard their story. I also appreciate and respect the vulnerability it takes to make that phone call or book that first appointment. Taking that first step is often the hardest part of the therapeutic process, but once it is done you are no longer alone. You will be entering a space where authenticity, compassion, practicality, and experience will be the driving force behind every session. Counselling is not a magic bullet; it requires commitment and work. I commit to working alongside you to define your goals and to find solutions that meet your needs. My objective is to give you the skills and tools to regain control of your life and to independently make decisions that serve you today and into the future.
Aside from a 30-year career in education, I am also a mother of four adult children and a grandmother to a precious little grandson, all who have been my greatest teachers! I have lived to date an imperfect, full and joyous life, where I have built a wealth of experience that has helped me to meet people where they are at and not where they are expected to be. I continue to live, learn, and be inspired by everyone I meet – especially my courageous clients.
My approach involves a strength-based model. I take the time to authentically understand my clients and their needs and work cohesively with them to co construct a plan that will serve them long term. Without any contracts to lock them in, clients have the freedom, flexibility, and control over their own therapy. In my practice, every client is important, valued, and respected and each session is uniquely crafted to honour the client’s individuality.
I hope to welcome you into our rooms and share the unique experience that Cardia Counselling offers.
So lovely talking with Tina in my adult counselling session. Safe, supportive and constructive. I left with my heart lightened and a direction to think about. Thank you so much, Tina.
